The study highlights how climate change worsens drought conditions across europe. A global team of climate scientists found that record-breaking heat is the key factor behind these droughts, outweighing the influence of seasonal rainfall shortages. The continent faces shrinking river levels, water usage bans, and dangerous wildfires following a historic June heatwave. Data shows that rising global temperatures significantly speed up the evaporation of moisture from land and water sources. This creates an environment that is both dry and highly unstable. Even with below-average spring rainfall, it was the temperature spikes driven by climate change that turned the situation into a critical drought.

The World Weather Attribution team published a report explaining how increasing temperatures drain natural water supplies. Mariam Zachariah from Imperial College London pointed out that the drought isn’t mainly caused by less rainfall, but by a warmer atmosphere pulling more moisture from the land. This means drought risk rises even if rainfall patterns stay steady. Scientists explain that a warmer air can hold about seven percent more water vapor for each 1°C increase in temperature. This higher capacity makes evaporation from soil and plants much more intense across the landscape.
Researchers used extensive weather data and advanced models to compare today’s hotter climate to a world that was 1.4°C cooler. Their findings show that extremely dry soils are now five times more common in western Europe than in a less-warmed world caused by human activity. In eastern Europe, these soil moisture deficits are 11 times more likely. The study also found that the high evaporative demand observed from April to June in western Europe was about 80 times more probable. Rainfall shortages that once would not have caused severe drought now lead to much drier soils.
Calls Grow Urging Global Emissions Cuts
Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich stressed that soil drying tendencies are already intensifying in spring. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst grows quickly, pulling moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and the soil. A relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created perfect conditions for large wildfires. The rapid drying of land made it easier for fires to spread. This contributed to severe wildfires across multiple countries. The study confirms that climate change-driven droughts in Europe are shifting weather patterns into dangerous cycles.
The agricultural sector is under unprecedented pressure due to widespread soil moisture loss. Drought conditions are causing severe damage to crops across borders. France expects its lowest maize harvest in 50 years. Romania has lost more than one million hectares of maize, threatening regional food security. These losses, combined with ongoing global conflicts, could push food prices higher and impact low-income households most. The situation underscores the urgent need for action.
Projections Indicate Ongoing Warming
Hydrological impacts are worsening the economic damage. Low river levels disrupt cargo transport, causing shipping delays on key waterways. Such disruptions threaten energy production in regions dependent on hydropower. The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that June was the hottest ever recorded in western Europe. Many countries are now implementing emergency measures, including restrictions or bans on non-essential water use, to conserve dwindling supplies.
Scientists warn that drought conditions could become even more frequent if global temperatures keep rising. They emphasize that these evaporative extremes are already happening at 1.4°C of warming. If emissions push global temperatures to 2.8°C, the likelihood of such conditions could double. Without urgent action to cut emissions, experts warn Europe faces a future of endless scorching, dry summers, and worsening droughts.
