VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is in the process of developing BEACONSAT, its first military satellite and the largest spacecraft made entirely within the country so far. The satellite’s purpose is to identify and analyze jamming and spoofing signals that interfere with global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo. Austria intends to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The mission aims to detect orbital interference and collect data on when and where disruptions to navigation systems occur.

As part of a multi-year research initiative, BEACONSAT will act as a technology demonstrator. Jamming refers to radio signals that block or weaken satellite navigation signals. Spoofing involves transmitting false information to mislead receivers into calculating wrong positions. Satellite navigation is crucial for aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency responders, and many other systems. The Austrian Defence Ministry expects the data from this mission to aid operational decisions and improve understanding of GNSS interference.
GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space tech firm, is leading the BEACONSAT project and holds overall responsibility. The company, which spun off from TU Wien in 2022, specializes in chemical propulsion systems for satellite maneuvering. For this project, GATE Space provides the propulsion unit, satellite structure, and thermal control systems. They have conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport, simulating atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core Austrian Technology Drives the Satellite Mission
Several European firms contribute vital systems to Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies technology capable of detecting and analyzing GNSS interference with high accuracy. Denmark’s Space Inventor offers additional components, including the onboard computer. The project combines commercial hardware with systems specifically developed for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space with around 750,000 euros through Austria Wirtschaftsservice.
The European Space Agency backs and co-finances the initiative via its ESA Marketplace program for technology demonstrations. This program enables commercial space technologies to be tested for security applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator, not an independent operational satellite. Its purpose is to gather data on orbital interference affecting satellite signals. These findings will inform the Defence Ministry as Austria develops its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT’s Role in Austria’s Expanding Space Strategy
Austria’s Defence Ministry is establishing a dedicated space services unit. This team will handle satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is part of this broader effort, with a specific focus on navigation interference. The military space strategy approved in 2023 envisions the Austrian Armed Forces evolving from just using space services to operating space infrastructure and systems. The plan is set to run through 2035 and beyond.
The scheduled launch for BEACONSAT is February 2027, with a Falcon 9 rocket expected to carry it into orbit. Once deployed, the satellite will monitor and analyze GNSS interference for its research mission. The project involves Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology companies. This will be Austria’s first military satellite mission, testing domestically developed systems to monitor disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other navigation services.
